What We Do Here at Vinylhaven:
"If it sounds good, it is good."
--Duke Ellington
(This is a general overview. For more specific information check our Economy Transfer
Procedure page and our Standard Transfer Procedure page.)
Your LPS/Tapes arrive at our studio.
When your LPs/cassettes/8 tracks/reel-to-reel tapes arrive here at Vinylhaven, we inventory
each item, entering all information into our database and then we immediately begin to
process your order.
We Inspect your tapes
With 8 tracks and cassettes, we visually inspect to ensure that they are clean and that there
are no visible, readily identifiable problems (melted rollers, deteriorating backing pads,
cracked shells, defective internal mechanisms, etc.)
We Clean your LPs/45s
With all vinyl (Lps/45s/EPs, etc.) We gently clean all your vinyl twice:
First using the Discwasher 4 system (used by the Library of congress for their collection), and
then a second time using Gruv-Glide which further deep cleans, de-staticizes and actually
lubricates the vinyl surface. This stuff is terrific and we recommend it very highly.
Before transferring your vinyl recordings, we listen to the first few minutes of each side, to
check the recording levels. We set our levels for optimum results/saturation without
over-modulating ('clipping') the signal.
We Transfer your Music Digitally
Your vinyl is next transferred using our Luxman PD 272 turntable mounted with a ClearAudio
Aurum Classic cartridge, or using our Marantz 6300 turntable mounted with a ClearAudio
Aurum Classic cartridge.
These are fantastic vintage high-end turntables that Vinylhaven recently had completely
refurbished (after transferring over 4000 LPs, each needed a tune-up and much lubrication!).
We really like the ClearAudio Aurum Classic cartridge because it is the best sounding moving
magnet cartridge we have come across in 30 + years of listening to LPs. It is a superb
cartridge that paints an amazingly clear and warm soundstage and we guarantee that you'll
be very pleased with the results.
We use the Bellari VP 129 tube phono pre-amp to boost signal and to translate the RIAA
equalization curve. This particular phono pre-amp imbues each recording with a warmth and
clarity that only a tube pre-amp can give.
Vinylhaven also uses Creative Labs Audigy Z-S sound cards to convert the analog signal to
digital.
When each side of your LP has been recorded in CD quality 24 bit, 44,100 samples/second
stereo (ie.: "Red Book Standard") using the aforementioned equipment, we then hand divide
each uncompressed (AIFF or WAV) sound file into individual tracks. Each song is one track.
In the case of song suites (think side 2 of The Beatles' Abbey Road, or ELP's Tarkus, or a
great deal of 1970s progressive-rock: Yes, Genesis, King Crimson) however, we will not
divide up these side long musical extravaganzas. Each track will be labelled, but will not be
divided up.
We Restore Your Music--Removing Clicks, Pops & Surface Noise
If you have chosen to have your LP or tape restored (Vinylhaven's Standard Transfer Service)
we now run each track through our filtering/restoration software to remove the clicks, pops
and hiss that was not removed by our double cleaning. This is a time intensive effort that
yields excellent results. We recommend it highly if your LPs are in anything less than very
good to mint condition.
If you opt for the full color cover art, we scan your album cover, both front and back (even the
gatefold if you so desire for an additional $4). See our price list for further details
If you have chosen to have your music compressed for use on an iPod or similar MP3 player,
Vinylhaven will then convert each track to MP3 format (they are compressed at 192 kilobit per
second, not the 'standard' 128 kbps) using the A.M.E. open source de-coder. This renders the
MP3 files slightly larger, but the difference in fidelity is very noticeable.
If you have opted for the Standard Transfer Service your LPs/Cassettes/8 tracks/reel-to-reel
tapes are converted into uncompressed, high-resolution WAV (Windows) or AIFF (Apple Mac)
file format, or they can be compressed to 192 KBPS MP3 format if you wish.
If you've gone to the trouble and expense of having us filter your LPs,or tapes, chances are
you will probably want to retain an uncompressed audiophile grade copy of your digitized
music files (WAV or AIFF).
Your Recordings are Burned onto CD
Your music files--be they MP3 or AAC (compressed format); WAV or AIFF (uncompressed
format)--are then burned to name brand (we use either Maxell or Memorex brand) silver-silver
type CDR.
Artist and Album Info is printed directly on your CDs
We print Artist Name, Album Title, customer and order information directly on the CD itself
using a Primera brand thermal ink printer. We do not use adhesive labels that are likely to
bubble and peel off over time.
Once we have completed transferring/restoring all your LPs/Tapes, we will email you and
payment will be due then upon our completion of the job.
We send you an invoice and you pay via Paypal
Paypal is an online payment service that accepts and processes major credit cards and bank
transfers using the latest Secure Socket layer encryption to assure you the utmost safety and
security in making payments online. You don't even have to have a paypal account (though it
is very handy).
You can pay with paypal using most major credit cards or have paypal link directly to your
bank account.
If you wish to pay by another method--by personal check or money order--your order may be
delayed in being shipped back to you as we will have to wait for funds to clear.
We ship your LPs/Tapes and your Brand New Digitized CDs Back to You
We carefully and methodically pack up and then ship back to you all your original
albums/tapes (now cleaned and restored!) plus all your new pristine CDs/DVDs. We ship via
USPS or UPS. Click here for information regarding shipping costs to and from our location.
If you are not completely satisfied with our work, we will either re-do the job, or refund your
money. We cannot, however, refund shipping costs as these costs involve a third party.
Now you get to kick back and enjoy all your newly digitized and restored music!
Thank you for considering Vinylhaven for your audio transfer and restoration and we hope
you decide to choose us. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
